Conservation AreaThe Monk Sherborne Conservation Area, as its name implies, covers a major part of the village, although does not include a majority of the dwellings. It stretches in a mainly north-south line from Manor Farm and All Saints' church in the south to Wantage Cottage, Salters Heath Road, in the north. The area covers a large extent of land in the south, centered round the war memorial, covering Rockery Farm and Rook Hill in the west and Appletree and Iris Cottages to the east. To the north, beyond Rook Hill and Queens House, the Area covers only the buildings to the east of Salters Heath road. The Area expands to cover both sides of the road around The Mole, incorporating Clifton House, Flaxborne and Western Cottage and then continues up Salters Heath Road to the north and stops at Wantage Cottage.
A map of the conservation area (676KB) can be found on the Basingstoke & Deane web site. The dotted line on the map represents the conservation area and the solid line the "Designated Settlement Area". This map forms part of the local plan. Other maps can be also be found there.
The latest formal appraisal of the Monk Sherborne Consevation Area was performed in 2003 and a few copies of the plans and report are held by the Parish Council, and will be made available on the Basingstoke & Deane web site in the Conservation Area Appraisal section.
A few of the listed buildings in Monk Sherborne, both in out of the Conservation Area, can be found on the Images of England website. (Hint: use the Search facility, and select Hampshire, then Basingstoke & Deane and then a category of building).
The history of the village and its origins have been documented in many places. For example, the Hampshire Local Pages, and the Hampshire genealogical Society has some rather nice pictures of All Saints' church which is a key feature of the Conservation Area. There are also some areas of Archaeological Significance which are also near Manor Farm and the Church.
More details of what constitutes a conservation area can be found on the Basingstoke & Deane web site.
Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council is responsible for maintaining and preserving the character of the Conservation Area, in consultation with Local Councillors and the Parish Council and other local groups. The Basingstoke & Deane web site has the forms and advice needed if development or planning is being considered.
