ALERT - 29 April 2010

Date posted 30 Apr 2010

Dear All

Yes, I do still exist!  The lack of contact has been mainly as a result of some leave I took at the beginning of April for 11 days, but more importantly through a drop in crime over the last few weeks.  (I have also been dealing with ‘bad people’!).

Outbuilding break-ins have fallen by over 60% since the end of March - in fact, there have not been any on this beat for exactly one month.  There have only been 9 in the whole of the Basingstoke & Deane rural area over that time period, and at several of those, no entry was actually gained to the sheds or garages.  Whether the lighter evenings and better weather have had an effect on this is anyone’s guess, but regardless, please do not lower your vigilance, continue to ring in anything suspicious, and keep everything well locked away.

In the Baughurst area, at Pound Green, a staddle stone top was stolen overnight 26th-27th April, and there has been an increase in antisocial driving involving a quad bike and two off-road motorbikes in the Haughurst Hill/Inhurst Lane/Long Grove area – if you have any information regarding these pests, please make contact.

Down in Sherborne St John, 4 chickens were stolen from the allotments in Cranes Road, but fortunately, I was able to identify the three 12 year old boys involved, who will be brought to Basingstoke police station for reprimands by a senior officer.  The chickens were retrieved safe and well and returned to their other feathered friends.

Not quite such good news was a spate of damage to cars outside Vidlers Farm, Kiln Road – around 12th April – several were scratched and a plant was dumped on top of one.

Earlier today, a white Ford Transit containing two males asking for scrap metal was disturbed near The Vyne - N895VEF.  It does not have a local current keeper.  There seems to be a marked increase in reports of such vehicles ‘touting’ for scrap metal, so if you have anything of that ilk which you would like to retain for yourselves, please ensure it is secure, and your boundary gates to yards, etc, are kept closed and preferably locked.
