Monk Sherborne & District Horticultural Society

The Monk Sherborne & District Horticultural Society has been active for many years.  Before the First World War the show was held at the Vyne and the classes for entrants were (!):

  • Single Handed Gardeners
  • Gardeners Employed in Gentlemens Gardens Under a Head Gardener
  • Amateurs
  • Artisans and Mechanics
  • Labourers and Cottagers

There were also some interesting sideshows including water pole or swimming for golf balls in the Lake!

During the War there was a gap of six years after which it was resumed in August 1920 in the grounds of Queens House, Monk Sherborne. The most unusual sideshow then was a ‘pig singing competition’ but unfortunately there is no report on how one took part in such a competition!

In the more recent past, the Society has very successfully entered for the courtyard competition at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, designing and building from scratch a courtyard garden, and has won many awards.

There have also been many successful entries in the window box and hanging basket competitions at both Chelsea and the RHS Show at Hampton Court.

The Society holds its AGM in January every year after which there is a talk on a horticultural theme.  In the past this has included talks with slides on sweet peas and chrysanthemums.  Once or twice a year there are social evenings for the Society members and guests to help swell the funds towards the costs of running the Annual Show.  There are also some entertaining evenings organised including quiz nights, bridge lunches and horticultural related talks all finishing with a very good supper.  Members also enjoy garden visits once or twice a year to places such as the Clematis Garden at Shillingford and Malmesbury Abbey. On becoming a member you can enjoy all activities together with free entrance to the Annual Show, plus the chance of winning tickets for Chelsea in the annual raffle.  You also qualify for reduced entry fees for the RHS gardens at Wisley and Rosemoor on production of the MS&D Horticultural Society’s Membership card. Horticultural show

A typical annual show sees some 750 or so entries in the various horticultural and handicraft classes, as well as the usual sideshows, band, delicious teas and barbecue, the Pimms tent, craft and plant stalls, an arena for children’s fancy dress competition and races and there has even been a children’s competition for growing the largest number of potatoes in a bucket!
